Up until now, audio quality has needed to be sacrificed for the sake of compression and convenience in our digitally evolving, instantly gratifying world. It wasn’t until Bob Stuart, CEO of Meridian, really studied new research of human listening and music processing that he was able to develop MQA, a music technology that reduces 100% of damage to music in its conversion process.
Sourced from the original studio master recording as approved by the creative team, MQA combines an advanced new digital sampling technology that captures extremely high frequency timing and detail in an audio signal with an equally novel system to “encapsulate” that data into a form for delivery using any lossless file format or streaming. The listener’s decoder reconstructs the entire original signal, bringing up an indicator confirming that what they are hearing is exactly the same as the original master. Without the decoder, the listener enjoys CD quality reproduction. Its most advanced form, “MQA Studio”, uses the technology in the studio to generate an even higher quality master recording as the source.
Meridian Room Correction (MRC): Room shape, size, furnishing and loudspeaker positions all influence the sound of a system in a room. The sound is often uneven, especially at the bass end, where low frequencies are too loud in some places and too quiet in others due to resonances. Meridian's Room Correction system uses powerful DSP to smooth out uneven room resonances, removing muddiness for clearer sound and better imaging.
Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP): MLP is a technology developed by Meridian to deliver higher-quality stereo and surround sound by reducing the filesize or required bandwidth of the audio signal without causing a reduction in quality (as is experienced with "lossy" systems like mp3). MLP compresses the signal losslessly so it takes up less room, making it possible to provide higher quality audio within the same bandwidth or media limitations. On replay, the original signal is recovered with guaranteed bit-for-bit accuracy. MLP was originally mandated for inclusion in the DVD-Audio format, and it is now part of Dolby TrueHD, which is part of the Blu-ray Disc format.
DSP Loudspeakers: The traditional setup of amplifiers driving passive loudspeakers is inefficient, and limits sound quality. Meridian loudspeakers contain a complete, matched audio system with efficient DSP crossovers, multiple DACs and driver-specific amplifiers, giving higher overall quality, lower power consumption, and the performance of a traditional loudspeaker eight times the physical volume.
Enhanced Bass Alignment (EBA): At a live musical event, all the frequencies you hear – all the wavefronts – arrive at the correct time. In any loudspeaker, however, bass frequencies arrive late, and the lower they are the later they arrive. Many manufacturers ameliorate this by changing the position of the mid and high frequency drivers or adding delays to bring them back into time – this is often called "time alignment". But while this is a good solution for mid and high frequencies, there is quite a time variation across the band covered by the bass drivers themselves. Meridian uses a series of special DSP-created digital filters, each of which delays just a small range of frequencies, each by exactly the right amount. It's so ingenious, we've applied for a patent. The result is a clearer soundstage with improved imaging and transient response – improvements you can clearly hear. And it's something only a Meridian DSP Loudspeaker can do.
